There was a recent article in The Globe and Mail on 4 common mistakes parents make when praising their kids that can actually harm them.
These were:
You’re so smart!
You’re incredibly good at this!
You were the best player on the field today!
You’re so good!
Instead we should be giving constructive praise like ‘you’ve worked really hard on that.’ I know I always tell Bastien I love watching him do things. ‘I love watching you build with blocks!’ or ‘I love watching you swim’ but it will be hard to always remember to praise constructively.
